Our Story

We are often asked where the name “Cartwright & Co” originated.

The story of Cartwright & Co begins with Steve Cartwright and Linda Morgan, who met at work in April 1989. A few months later, they started dating, and after a whirlwind romance, they were married on 23 December 1989.

At the time, Steve was running a small part-time business — F.E.A. Accountancy Services — with around twenty clients. Linda, while still working full-time, played a key role in helping Steve develop and grow that business.

When their first child was born in November 1990, Linda left full-time employment to launch her own venture, Cartwright Taxation Bureau, operating from the family home. Both businesses quickly built strong reputations, mainly through word-of-mouth referrals and the couple’s tireless commitment to their clients.

It was truly a round-the-clock operation — Steve and Linda often worked late into the night, balancing their growing client base with raising two young children. Their dedication to providing quality, personal service set the tone for what Cartwright & Co would become.

As both businesses grew, the two merged to form Cartwright & Co.

Initially a partnership, the firm later became Cartwright & Co Ltd and continued to expand solely through client recommendations — no advertising necessary.

By 1997, with demand rising, Steve and Linda moved the business into dedicated offices at Cadet House on Racecommon Road, Barnsley. Briefly, they operated a second office in Rotherham’s Imperial Buildings, where Steve also lectured part-time for the Rotherham Enterprise Agency.

In 2007, they took another significant step forward — acquiring land on Industry Road, Carlton, where they built a purpose-designed office, Henry Morgan House.

By this stage, Linda had largely retired while Steve continued to lead the business with the support of a loyal, long-serving team.

Then, in early 2018, Steve and Linda received an unexpected offer from another accountancy firm interested in buying Cartwright & Co. After discussing it with his trusted office manager, Paul Hendley, Steve discovered that Paul himself was interested in taking the reins.

That conversation marked the beginning of a new chapter. On 30 September 2018, Paul took over as Director and owner of Cartwright & Co Ltd, following Steve’s retirement after decades of dedication.

Today, Paul upholds the same values that Steve and Linda built the firm on — honesty, reliability, and genuine care for clients. Many of the loyal, long-serving team members remain in vital roles within the business and ensure the commitment to straightforward, quality service remains precisely the same.
